Managing Conflict

Managing Conflict

The best way to manage conflict is prevention, by communicating in different situations in a way that prevents conflicts from developing. The conflict behaviors we use are a consequence of both our human qualities and the demands of the situation in which we find ourselves. By assessing our conflict management styles and applying consciously chosen conflict management methods, we can deal effectively with conflict situations that arise.

"When two people always agree, one of them is unnecessary." - Henry Ford

At the level of the individual, conflict arises in two extreme manifestations, some paralyzing and incapacitating, others aggressive.

If we spend much time maintaining a relationship, obviously there will be less conflict. Nowadays, the time devoted to conflict management has been significantly reduced, while we ourselves are more stressed. As a consequence, it has become much more difficult to keep conflicts constructive, to deal with them constructively, to manage our possible anger, i.e. to manage conflict.

Areas addressed by conflict management

We offer tailor-made solutions to deal with different conflict situations. Conflict management addresses the following areas:

  • Conflict tolerance. Whatever the nature of the conflict, the attitudes of the people involved towards themselves, their partner and the conflict are essential. How do we manage our own tensions? Can we manage our partner's tension? To what extent do we allow conflict to diminish or paralyze our own capacity for judgement and action? How much do we let it spill over into our environment?
  • Cnflicting personalities or toeams. What is my natural reaction in conflict situations? How does my partner react? What are our needs? How can I quickly recognize this and ensure that both our needs are met?
  • Conflicts at work, among team members. What differences of interest might exist? What can I do to identify these and the underlying motives? How can I bridge these differences and develop appropriate resolution strategies together? The ability to handle conflict at a skill level - i.e. conflict management - is essential when it comes to building productive teams.

With our conflict management tools, we can assess the origin and cause of conflicts and provide tailor-made, proven solutions for a wide range of situations.
