Assertive Communication

Assertive Communication

Our effectiveness in asserting our interests is based on the quality of our communication. On our program, we focus on the foundational skills that are necessary for this.

Who should attend:

Leaders and team members

Ideal class size:

8-12

Duration:

½ days

When we think of communication – especially when it comes to leaders – we often think first of how well someone speaks. But active listening, with full presence, is just as important! We need to be able to operate well both ways, but when it comes to listening, we often need to make more of an effort, because our own instincts can easily override our good intentions. This rarely results in an outcome that we are both happy with.

As a result of our Assertive Communication Program, you will:
  • Identify your barriers: What are your habits that hinder mutual understanding?

  • Express what you want: The key to tactful communication is not to hold things back, but to create receptivity in your listener.

  • Reduce tension: It is hard to avoid emotional reactions – in ourselves and in our partner – when it comes to sensitive issues. However, to keep the conversation constructive, we need to reduce the tension that has built up – both in ourselves and in our partner.

  • Reduce turnover: One of the main causes of turnover is that people feel that we don't understand them, that we don't “get” what is going on inside them. This is also a problem for our existing staff, but newcomers are particularly vulnerable to this.

Listen 10% more!

Often, we don't need to radically change the way we communicate; just changing our attitude can bring spectacular results. If we get into the habit of listening a little more than we used to, we can gain much more information while building relationships and reducing stress in our environment.

Our Assertive Communication program builds on Blanchard's decades of experience in leadership and organizational development.
